Fund raising Summer BBQ success

28/06/2017

The Archway Homes annual Summer BBQ was held on 24th June and, as with previous years, the event was an opportunity for us to thank all our staff, professionals and subcontractors for their hard work over the year and also to raise money for charity. The event had a particular focus this year because of an inspiring family who are buying Plot 2 at Wood Farm, Guilden Sutton.

Gayle Fowler had been looking for a new home for a number of years, but in August 2016 she finally progressed from looking to having detailed conversations with us. Gayle and Neil have three children but their middle daughter has a rare condition called Rett Syndrome which affects 1 in 12,000 girls. Ciara was diagnosed with the condition when she was only 2 and it has left her severely disabled. Now, at age 7, Ciara is getting to the stage that an ordinary home is not going to continue to meet her needs. Gayle and Neil cannot continue to carry her upstairs and they need more specialist equipment to help care for her.

Conversations with the Archway team resulted in a change of house type for one of the plots at the Wood Farm development. This allowed space, in what would have been the study, to install a lift shaft. After a number of detailed conversations with the Fowlers and their professional team, and a number of different versions of the plans for a new home to ensure all their requirements were met, the decision was made and Gayle and Neil reserved Plot 2.

Over the coming months more information will be provided about the modifications that were required and the amazing support of all the people involved in building what has been called the 'Ciara' house type.

Gayle and Neil are inspirational people - despite the demands of Ciara and their two other delightful children, Michael and Sophia, they not only hold down demanding jobs, but also find time to promote and raise money for the charity, Reverse Rett, which is making progress in finding a cure for Rett Syndrome. Neil, in fact, cycled 500 miles over 36 hours during one of the hottest weekends of the year so far, on the 17th - 18th June. They have also moved into rented accomodation while waiting for their new home to be built. Hence, it seemed only fitting that the Fowler family should be invited, as guests of honour, to the Summer BBQ this year.

During the event, in addition to the good company, wonderful food prepared by Big 5 Catering, an ice cream van, a bouncy castle and bungy run, a raffle was held to raise money for Reverse Rett, with many of our professionals, suppliers, staff and subcontractors contributing some superb prizes. In view of the worthwhile cause, many who were not able to come bought rafffle tickets in advance. Then, on the day, those that were at the event dug deep into their pockets and a fantastic sum of over £1500 was raised. This was handed over to a very grateful, delighted and somewhat tearful Gayle and Neil on the day. A fantastic end to a perfect day!
